After two years in operation, Southern Ocean Lodge took a break mid-July this year as an opportunity to do some refreshments (ie maitenance) in and around the Lodge.
It was a different feel for Southern Ocean Lodge; many department heads swapped hats to get stuck in to the nitty gritty!
Some fast facts:
- Some 180 tonnes of Italian limestone sandblasted and resealed
- All carpets in 21 suites steamcleaned
- All interior walls of suites and the 270metre long breezeway repainted
- All reclaimed timber floorboards polished
- All outdoor teak furniture re-oiled
- 1200 seedlings planted around the Lodge site. The seeds originated onsite and were propagated at the KI Seed bank before returning for planting
- Around 500 loads of yacca mulch distributed around the Lodge
Southern Ocean Lodge reopened to welcome its inaugural Expedition Kangaroo Island, and a fully booked Lodge.
Fires burning, wine flowing, the Southern Ocean gliding icily by outside. It’s the place to be.

Kangaroo Island Spirits wins at International Wine and Spirits Awards 2010
Kangaroo Island Spirits (KIS), SA’s only Boutique distillery has enjoyed a recent win with two awards granted at the prestigious International Wine and Spirits Competition in London.
Competing against hundreds of competitors from around the world in blind tasting, KI Spirits proprietors Jon and Sarah Lark were thrilled with the results:
Silver Medal – KIS Anisette Liqueur
Bronze medal – KIS Wild Gin
The International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) was founded in 1969 and is the premier competition of its kind in the world. Its aim is to promote the quality and excellence of the world’s best wines, spirits and liqueurs.
The 2010 IWSC received entries from over 80 countries worldwide.
The competition is backed by a group of vice presidents made up of the most influential men and women in the trade, including Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, Miguel Torres, Marchese Piero Antinori, Robert Drouhin, Robert Mondavi, May de Lencquesaing, Kenneth Graham and Sir Anthony Greener.

Luxurious Kangaroo Island resort Southern Ocean Lodge has been ranked the best hotel in the world by Swiss business magazine Bilanze. The win was based on numerous tests and interviews with industry experts and is a huge accolade for the multi-award winning luxe accommodation.
$7000 raised for KI Country Education Fund
$7000 raised for Kangaroo Island Country Education
More than $7000 was raised at the first annual dinner for the Kangaroo Island Country Education Fund.
The dinner for 65 people at the Aurora Ozone Hotel included three courses, wine and an auction of eight prestige items – including a night for two at Southern Ocean Lodge and two nights at the Aurora Heavitree Gap Lodge at Alice Springs.
