Artist Janine Mackintosh is famous for her Kangaroo Island leaf mandalas, which highlight the sandstone walls of the Southern Ocean Lodge dining room. Her works are a popular take-home purchase for guests who are entranced by the rhythmic, intricate leaf patterns, each of them unique as their natural medium dictates. Vistors to Kangaroo Island can view her works at the KI Fine Art Gallery.

Gaining national and international recognition, Janine’s magnificent mandala, ‘Above & Beyond’ has just won the People’s Choice Award of the 59th Blake Prize for religious and spiritual art at the National Art School Gallery in Sydney.

‘Above and Beyond’ is created from Eucalyptus cyanophylla leaves, with linen thread and bookbinders gum on canvas.

It was one of 68 works in the shortlisted exhibition (selected from 1,900 entries) and has also been chosen for the Prize’s year-long tour, kicking off at the Adelaide Festival Theatre and running there from 23 October to 28 November 2010. As Janine says, ‘I’m over the moon and still can’t quite believe it!’
