SOL's first guests, Peter and Valmai Norton

James and Hayley Baillie, Mike Rann open SOL

Southern Ocean Lodge turns three today, and what a momentous three years it’s been! From opening its rust coloured doors in 2008 to reveal the Lodge’s Great Room with sweep of Southern Ocean and coastline beyond, the Lodge has since welcomed guests from within Australia and from around the world, featured in an amazing number of media reviews, starred in Trip Advisor and wowed the world with accolades such as Tatler’s Best Hotel (2009), Gourmet Traveller Awards and a recent nod from luxury travel reviewer Andrew Harper. A big congratulations to Lodge Managers Ben and Louise Lanyon who continue to create an incredible product on a daily basis, to the team at Southern Ocean Lodge whose hard work and friendly attitude wins hearts the world over, and to James and Hayley whose dream it was to create Australia’s first true luxury lodge on the remote, beautiful wilderness of Kangaroo Island.

The Coopers Kangaroo Island Cup Carnival is held annually in February at the Cygnet River Racecourse, Kingscote and is one of the the largest events the Island hosts.

Set on the banks of the picturesque Cygnet River, the Kangaroo Island Racecourse provides the perfect entertainment environment for over 4,000 people trackside, marquee and party tent facilities, Club and Stable bars and all the fun of a day of country horse racing with betting, Fashions on the Field and a range of entertainment options.

This year Southern Ocean Lodge became a KI Cup Gold Sponsor with the introdution of the ‘Southern Ocean Lodge Maiden Plate’. Lodge managers Louise and Ben Lanyon attended to present the trophy and present a fabulous accommodation prize to the winner of the Fashions in the Field.

In the event, a good old fashioned downpour on Friday meant the horse racing was cancelled. A great crowd turned out to enjoy the festivities nonetheless, and Fashions in the Field was considered a highlight.

We are forunate to feature some of cermaist Malcolm Greenwood’s ceramics at both Southern Ocean Lodge and sister property Capella.

Malcolm’s works reflect so beautifully the natural environment of both lodges’ locations in colours, texture and form.

The Sentinels at Southern Ocean Lodge

Functionally, Malcolm’s works are diverse; his plates and bowls are used in the restaurant, whilst vases adorn the Great Lounge and guest suites.

‘The Sentinels’ are the most recent addition to our colletion of Malcolm’s ceramics at Southern Ocean Lodge, and stand as ancient, silent sentinels towards the entrance of the Lodge.

Remarkable rectangular dishes

Recent guest Stefania Fumigalli shares her experiences at Southern Ocean Lodge and in the remote wilderness of Kangaroo Island;

‘…The Southern Ocean Lodge has really inspired me and I am really grateful you gave me the opportunity to experience the beautiful Spa and the eagle’s flight, the solitary beach with the sea lion looking for rest, and the comfort of my no.10 suite in respectful memory of the shipwrecked steamer “Eva”.’

SOUTHERN OCEAN LODGE WOWS RENOWNED LUXURY TRAVEL WRITER
Andrew Harpers Hideaway Report

March 2011 issue of Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report® highlights the best of Kangaroo Island

Andrew Harper, one of the world’s foremost voices in writing about luxury travel, recently traveled to South Australia and reported on the pleasures he experienced during his visit in the March 2011 issue of Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report®. This latest issue features reports from Harper’s journey to Kangaroo Island with the editor in chief giving high marks to the Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island, which Harper notes was “undoubtedly the highlight of our trip to Australia.”

Harper’s journey illustrates what makes South Australia unique. As arguably the most diverse region in the country, it offers visitors the best of Wildlife, the Outback, and Wine in the form of world-class wine and cuisine; an abundance of natural beauty and epic adventure; and a variety of stunning destinations—from the Flinders Ranges to the stunning Outback and Kangaroo Island, known as “Australia’s Galapagos.”

As the editor in chief of Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report®, which has been published since 1979, Harper is known worldwide for his discriminating taste and no-holds-barred reviews. He travels incognito, paying his own way, in search of what he terms “hotels and resorts of individuality and distinction” and has recommended fewer than 1,000 properties around the globe over the last three decades.

An accoloade such as this is a ‘WOW!’ for all at Southern Ocean Lodge.
