Charlie Brooker from the UK’s Guardian posts a terrific recount of his adventures in South Australia, from swimming with tuna to a rest at swish Southern Ocean Lodge.

Here’s an excerpt:

‘We stayed at the Southern Ocean Lodge, a place so confidently swish and friendly, I
instantly felt like a burglar. It’s easily the most upmarket place I’ve ever
stayed: I was almost ashamed to go to the toilet. The architecture is straight
out of Grand Designs: all floor-to-ceiling windows and
understated modernity, not to mention stunning views across the ocean – the
lodge is perched atop a cliff, overlooking a beach, situated in between two
national parks. If it housed a death ray (which I’m fairly sure it doesn’t),
this would be precisely the sort of place a taste-conscious Bond villain might
construct…’

SOUTHERN OCEAN LODGE WOWS RENOWNED LUXURY TRAVEL WRITER
Andrew Harpers Hideaway Report

March 2011 issue of Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report® highlights the best of Kangaroo Island

Andrew Harper, one of the world’s foremost voices in writing about luxury travel, recently traveled to South Australia and reported on the pleasures he experienced during his visit in the March 2011 issue of Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report®. This latest issue features reports from Harper’s journey to Kangaroo Island with the editor in chief giving high marks to the Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island, which Harper notes was “undoubtedly the highlight of our trip to Australia.”

Harper’s journey illustrates what makes South Australia unique. As arguably the most diverse region in the country, it offers visitors the best of Wildlife, the Outback, and Wine in the form of world-class wine and cuisine; an abundance of natural beauty and epic adventure; and a variety of stunning destinations—from the Flinders Ranges to the stunning Outback and Kangaroo Island, known as “Australia’s Galapagos.”

As the editor in chief of Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report®, which has been published since 1979, Harper is known worldwide for his discriminating taste and no-holds-barred reviews. He travels incognito, paying his own way, in search of what he terms “hotels and resorts of individuality and distinction” and has recommended fewer than 1,000 properties around the globe over the last three decades.

An accoloade such as this is a ‘WOW!’ for all at Southern Ocean Lodge.

SOUTHERN OCEAN LODGE once again RECEIVES ANDREW HARPER’S PRESTIGIOUS RECOMMENDATION

(FEBRUARY 9, 2011) Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report, the most respected publication in luxury travel, announced in its March 2011 issue the recommendation of Southern Ocean Lodge.

The recommendation follows an Andrew Harpers Australian itinerary, of which Southern Ocean Lodge was declared a highlight.

The full online review will be available online from 1 March 2011; stay tuned! Meanwhile please see following for an excerpt from the Hideaway Report.

It has been some time since we’ve been as impressed by a new hotel as we were by SOUTHERN OCEAN LODGE, which opened in March 2008. At the end of a long, bumpy road, iron gates swung aside, and shortly thereafter, we caught our first glimpse of the property, perched high above Kangaroo Island’s spectacular southern coast. There, dramatic wind- and sea-gouged cliffs are scoured by white-crested breakers and punctuated by glorious white-sand beaches…

…On a memorable four-hour excursion to Flinders Chase National Park, we saw dozens of Australian sea lions and New Zealand fur seals, volcanic blowholes, several historic lighthouses and numerous kangaroos, wallabies and koalas. Southern Ocean Lodge was undoubtedly the highlight of our trip to Australia.

All of Andrew Harper’s recommended properties possess exceptional character, a commitment to classic hospitality and a profound sense of place. Mr. Harper does not evaluate hotels by means of a checklist, but uses his three decades of experience to distinguish the truly enchanting from the merely excellent. Southern Ocean Lodge is delighted to be among the best of the best properties worldwide to receive his recommendation, which came initially in 2008.
