Expeditioners explore the Remarkable Rocks

Baillie Lodges is excited to announce dates for the popular ‘Expedition Kangaroo Island’ at Southern Ocean Lodge in July 2011. The week-long program departing 23 July 2011 promises days and nights filled with adventure and learning in the company of like-minded travellers and with Southern Ocean Lodge as ‘luxury basecamp’.

The program has been designed to allow guests, as ‘expeditioners’ the chance to explore first-hand a complete experience of the beautifully wild Kangaroo Island, showcasing its abundant native wildlife, spirited art, delicious local cuisine and fascinating history. In true expedition style, the week will be filled with interactive ‘hands-on’ adventures, guided walks, marine–based activities and informative presentations.

Widely regarded as Australia’s Galapagos and brimming with diverse flora and fauna, a rich heritage and world class food
and wine culture, Kangaroo Island offers endless opportunities for exploration and adventure. An abundance of native wildlife thriving in freedom has earned the island the unofficial title of a ‘zoo without fences’.

July is the ideal time for the expedition as daytime temperatures are perfect for exploring, wildlife is active and evenings promise delicious cuisine and superb South Australian wines enjoyed by freshly stoked fires, wintry seas churning beyond.

We are excited that the renowned naturalist Craig Wickham of Exceptional Kangaroo Island with whom we have worked closely since opening in 2008 will join us as Expedition Kangaroo Island leader. Southern Ocean Lodge proprietor Hayley Baillie and the Lodge’s own team of naturalist guides will be part of each day’s itinerary, promising a very personal guided experience of the island.

Expedition Kangaroo Island is modelled on the much-loved Expedition Lord Howe programs run at sister property Capella Lodge over the past five years in cooperation with Aurora Expeditions, who are excited to be involved in the project
again this year.

The Expedition’s itinerary spans the western regions of the island, home to such wildlife celebrities as the Australian Sea Lions at Seal Bay, Australian and New Zealand Fur Seals in the Flinders Chase National Park, kangaroos, wallabies, goannas, echidnas and koalas in their natural habitat. We meet local artist Indiana James, creator of wildlife sculptures from discarded farm machinery including ‘Sunshine’, the kangaroo commissioned for the Lodge, and explore the north coast with historical highlights including the Cape Borda Lighthouse Station and its cemetery. We meet with Dr Peggy Rismiller, the island’s own expert on the Short-beaked Echidna and Rosenberg’s Goanna. Get up-close and buzzing with the Ligurian bees and take to the Southern Ocean in a marine zodiac to encounter penguins, sea birds, dolphins and seals.

Rates: Expeditioners can select their preferred luxury suite at Southern Ocean Lodge. Rates commence from $6,900 per person twin share and are inclusive of all dining, all beverages, guided experiences and guest lectures, flights to and from Kangaroo Island and much more.

A Remarkable Retreat | A toe-warming escape at Southern Ocean Lodge

Southern Ocean Lodge celebrates as Kangaroo Island comes into its own this cool season and announces the popular Stay 4 Pay 3 Remarkable Retreat package. Valid for stays 1 May – 30 September 2011, the Remarkable Retreat includes local epicurean treats, Southern Spa treatments and a bonus night’s luxury accommodation.

Daybreak on Kangaroo Island; the sun climbs watery above the horizon, its warm rays span golden across the arctic blue of the vast Southern Ocean and glint on the bed-ends in the suites at Southern Ocean Lodge, warming toes. Cool season sea mists rise to meet the morning, hinting at possibilities in the day ahead; the promise of fine, locally-sourced food and wine, of exploring the island’s remote coasts and of a first-hand Australian wildlife encounter, Galapagos-style.

As the beach-going summertime crowds return to busy lives on the mainland, a diverse and abundant natural wildlife emerges and is on the move by day, alert and refreshed by the cooler season. Visitors are afforded otherwise rare glimpses of kangaroo and koala joeys as they emerge from their mothers’ pouches, or the thrill of an echidna spotted warming in the gentle sun.

It’s a season to take a step out of the ordinary, to embark on new adventures and share encounters in unchartered territory, and then to quietly contemplate, a moment to acknowledge the natural grace of wilderness at its most pure.

It’s also the perfect season for eating well on Kangaroo Island as local farmers produce a bounty of fine local produce; free farmed lamb, beef, chicken and eggs, sheep milk yoghurts and cheeses and pure Ligurian honey. It’s a fine time to enjoy great South Australian wines from this world-class wine region, and ideal occasion to contemplate a smooth SA red by warmth of an open fire with the wintry blue ocean churning outside.

Southern Ocean Lodge is the ‘luxe base camp’ from which experience it all and to retreat at leisure.
A haven of relaxed luxury and welcoming sophistication, floor to ceiling windows in the Great Room open to the grand sweep of untouched horizons of sea and land. Contemporary suites styled with local limestone and custom furnishings invite time spent relaxing with a book or the company of a loved one, with the spectacular Southern Ocean beyond.

Stay four nights on the Remarkable Retreat from just $2,970 per person, including one bonus night’s accommodation, two $50 spa treatment vouchers and a hamper of KI epicurean treats to share or savour and save up to $3,800 per couple. The Sophisticated Solo package offers the solo traveller this great escape at the twin share rate, stay four nights and pay for three at just $990 per night!

Southern Ocean Lodge, now globally celebrated and multi-award winning defines Australian luxury travel.

The KI Food Safari kicks off at Southern Ocean Lodge this August 27th and charts a route of culinary discovery across Kangaroo Island in search of fabulous food and wine, hand-picked straight from the source. The five night KI Food Safari is a hands-on, muddy-boots paddock and vineyard discovery of Kangaroo Island’s best produce and its journey to the plates and glasses at the lauded Southern Ocean Lodge.

Grower to guest: Southern Ocean Lodge guests connect with South Australian producers!

Southern Ocean Lodge showcases an exclusively Kangaroo Island and South Australian culinary experience, locally sourced food and beverages at Southern Ocean Lodge connects guests with Kangaroo Island farmers and artisan producers.
Kangaroo Island and broader South Australia are blessed with a healthy and growing number of high quality food and beverage producers. With a passion to providing a real ‘sense of place’ for guests, Southern Ocean Lodge commits to a local culinary experience that honours the best and freshest regional ingredients across every menu, including the in-suite bar!
To eat only what is grown or produced locally to Southern Ocean Lodge is easy and a delight. Menus are created daily and according to the seasons, and each is designed to emphasise the finest local ingredients. Chef Jed Archdeacon passionately subscribes to the local dining philosophy, with the belief that to minimise the distance an ingredient travels before it reaches the plate ensures freshness and full flavour.
The Southern Ocean Lodge kitchen team works with many local, small scale artisan food producers both on the island and in the mainland and have established many exclusive, mutually beneficial relationships with its growers. An inaugural ‘KI producers’ lunch’ was established in late 2009 as a celebration of the relationships between the Lodge and its suppliers.
All fruit and vegetables used at the Lodge are sourced either on the island or within South Australia. All rate-included beverages including world-class wines and beers are sourced from Kangaroo Island and South Australia. A number of great local artisan producers supply the Lodge with seafood, beef, lamb, venison, pork and small goods.
Each producer has a commitment to quality, flavourful produce; there’s passion behind the produce, and sustainable farming methods are increasing. New producers of quality ingredients continue to appear keeping Southern Ocean Lodge menus interesting and dynamic.
Produce highlights include the Island Beehive Ligurian honey, sustainably produced seafoods including marron, abalone, lobster and oysters, the new ‘Rare Breeds’ pork farm, Island Pure sheep milk dairy, Southrock lamb, Fryars eggs and free-range chicken, coastal succulant samphire, KI saffron, olive oil and the mineral-rich Bay of Shoals salt.
Southern Ocean Lodge is privileged to act as ambassador for the region’s produce and for a growing host of suppliers and small businesses working with the Lodge, providing a great and increasing support to the local economy.
All dining and beverages are included in the daily rates at Southern Ocean Lodge.
