SOUTHERN OCEAN LODGE WOWS RENOWNED LUXURY TRAVEL WRITER
Andrew Harpers Hideaway Report

March 2011 issue of Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report® highlights the best of Kangaroo Island

Andrew Harper, one of the world’s foremost voices in writing about luxury travel, recently traveled to South Australia and reported on the pleasures he experienced during his visit in the March 2011 issue of Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report®. This latest issue features reports from Harper’s journey to Kangaroo Island with the editor in chief giving high marks to the Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island, which Harper notes was “undoubtedly the highlight of our trip to Australia.”

Harper’s journey illustrates what makes South Australia unique. As arguably the most diverse region in the country, it offers visitors the best of Wildlife, the Outback, and Wine in the form of world-class wine and cuisine; an abundance of natural beauty and epic adventure; and a variety of stunning destinations—from the Flinders Ranges to the stunning Outback and Kangaroo Island, known as “Australia’s Galapagos.”

As the editor in chief of Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report®, which has been published since 1979, Harper is known worldwide for his discriminating taste and no-holds-barred reviews. He travels incognito, paying his own way, in search of what he terms “hotels and resorts of individuality and distinction” and has recommended fewer than 1,000 properties around the globe over the last three decades.

An accoloade such as this is a ‘WOW!’ for all at Southern Ocean Lodge.

Fleurieu Summer Salad

Fleurieu Summer Salad

From Chef Jed Archdeacon: The new Fleurieu Summer Salad on the menu at Southern Ocean Lodge comprises all the summer season vegetables we receive from our organic local Fleurieu Peninsular supplier. We just toss the lightly poached vegetables and chill them, then toss them in our Kangaroo Island wild olive oil and scatter around the plate.

There are two jellies; one is made from beetroot and cabernet sauvignon vinegar, the other is a ginger-infused carrot jelly. When a guest cuts into the jellies they burst into liquid and this then forms the dressing. It’s really light and crisply flavoured, with the subtle spice of light ginger coming through with the carrot jelly.

Finally the little tied up vegetable is blanched leak stuffed with ashed goats cheese which is form Hindmarsh Valley Cheese Company; we tie it together with a little chive.

The idea is the guest receives the deconstructed salad at the table then they mess it all up to make their mixed salad. We’ve got some great feedback on it so far.

Artist Janine Mackintosh is famous for her Kangaroo Island leaf mandalas, which highlight the sandstone walls of the Southern Ocean Lodge dining room. Her works are a popular take-home purchase for guests who are entranced by the rhythmic, intricate leaf patterns, each of them unique as their natural medium dictates. Vistors to Kangaroo Island can view her works at the KI Fine Art Gallery.

Gaining national and international recognition, Janine’s magnificent mandala, ‘Above & Beyond’ has just won the People’s Choice Award of the 59th Blake Prize for religious and spiritual art at the National Art School Gallery in Sydney.

‘Above and Beyond’ is created from Eucalyptus cyanophylla leaves, with linen thread and bookbinders gum on canvas.

It was one of 68 works in the shortlisted exhibition (selected from 1,900 entries) and has also been chosen for the Prize’s year-long tour, kicking off at the Adelaide Festival Theatre and running there from 23 October to 28 November 2010. As Janine says, ‘I’m over the moon and still can’t quite believe it!’

Lodge Managers, Ben and Louise Lanyon

From the South Australian Tourism Commission’s ‘SA Stories’:

Ben and Louise, when you live and work in one of the world’s most breathtaking places, where do you choose to go on holiday?

”We generally just go home and visit family and friends,” laughs Louise Lanyon who, together with husband Ben, manages Kangaroo Island’s spectacular Southern Ocean Lodge. The dynamic duo – who have worked in some of Australia’s best luxury lodges – rate Southern Ocean Lodge as their favourite. “It’s an amazing place; an iconic Australian destination,” Ben says. And while Kangaroo Island is known to most European travellers heading Down Under, the couple say there are still plenty of Australians who have no idea where Kangaroo Island is – something the Lanyons are working hard to change. “About 50% of our market are domestic travellers that are seeking the types of quality experiences that Baillie Lodges provides,” Ben says.
